2010 Movie List (from IMDB)

February 26

The Crazies

Director: Breck Eisner
Stars: Radha Mitchell, Timothy Olyphant, Danielle Panabaker (Full Cast)
Studio: Overture Films

The Plot: As a toxin begins to turn the residents of Ogden Marsh, Iowa into violent psychopaths, sheriff David Dutton (Olyphant) tries to make sense of the situation while he, his wife (Mitchell), and two other unaffected townspeople band together in a fight for survival.

March 19

Season of the Witch

Director: Dominic Sena
Stars: Nicolas Cage, Ron Perlman, Claire Foy (Full Cast)
Studio: Lionsgate

The Plot: In a seaside Irish town, a widower sparks with a visiting horror novelist while he also begins to believe he is seeing ghosts.

THE BUZZ: Sounds like the beginning of a decent SyFy program, but as a feature film — really? I thought Lionsgate was restructuring itself as the studio of can’t-miss horror flicks and Tyler Perry movies. This one must have slipped through a Medieval crack or something. In truth, it’s part of a new deal for the studio (which you can read about here) but this isn’t the the most promising step forward, by my estimate.

March 26

The Eclipse

Director: Conor McPherson
Cast: Ciarán Hinds, Iben Hjejle, Aidan Quinn
Studio: Magnolia Pictures

The Plot: 14th-century knights transport a suspected witch to a monastery, where monks deduce her powers could be the source of the Black Plague.

April 30

A Nightmare on Elm Street

Director: Samuel Bayer
Stars: Jackie Earle Haley, Rooney Mara, Kyle Gallner (Full Cast)
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures

The Plot: Disfigured serial killer Freddy Krueger (Haley) stalks a group of young people in their dreams, forcing them to remain awake as the only alternative to death.

THE BUZZ: This might be the most appealing horror remake to date, merely due to the casting of Jackie Earle Haley as the sweatered one. And in the world of music video directors turned auteurs, here’s hoping Samuel Bayer (“Smells Like Teen Spirit”) is more Michel Gondry/Spike Jonze than McG/Joseph Khan. Have to admit I dug the teaser trailer, and I’m into the other cast members, especially Kyle Gallner (the most successful ex-“Veronica Mars” star?), Rooney Mara (potential new scream queen action), and Thomas Dekker (who should be seen this year in All About Evil, the first midnight movie directed by a drag queen).

May 28

Survival of The Dead

Director: George Romero
Stars: Devon Bostick, Athena Karkanis, Julian Richings (Full Cast)
Studio: Magnolia Pictures

The Plot: On an island off the coast of North America, local residents simultaneously fight a zombie epidemic while hoping for a cure to return their un-dead relatives back to their human state.

THE BUZZ: Magnolia Pictures picked up the movie for its genre-centric Magnet Releasing banner, and is currently slated to debut it as a video-on-demand title April 30 and then in theaters May 28. See Fango #291, on sale in February, for the beginning of our extensive and exclusive on-set coverage of SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD.

June 18

Jonah Hex

Director: Jimmy Hayward
Cast: Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, John Malkovich, Will Arnett, Michael Fassbender, Michael Shannon, David Patrick Kelly, Tom Townsend, Brandi Coleman, Natacha Itzel.
Studio: Warner Bros.

The Plot: In the Wild West, a scarred bounty hunter tracks a voodoo practitioner bent on liberating the South by raising an army of the undead.

THE BUZZ: Megan Fox and John Malkovich..Hmm, I can’t remember when was the last time I saw a good movie with Malkovich…

July 9

Predators

Director: Nimród Antal
Stars: Topher Grace, Danny Trejo, Adrien Brody
Studio: Summit Entertainment

The Plot: A group of elite warriors are hunted by members of a merciless alien race known as Predators.

THE BUZZ: The script is “bloody, violent, Hard-R script reminiscient of the original” that pits a team of seven kidnapped humans against Predators on the aliens’ home planet. Danny Trejo would be working on the film and he will apparantly be playing the character Cuchillo.

The film begins back on Earth, when Royce gets in a fight with another human, and kills his opponent — but some Predators are watching the whole thing from behind their camouflage screens. The Predators like what they see, so they kidnap Royce and shoot him over to their home planet.

Royce, along with seven other abducted humans, all wake up after parachuting into the Predator home planet.

Here is the full list of the humans in the film.

* Royce, a Steve McQueen type
* Cuchillo, a Mexican enforcer for a drug cartel who has twin uzis strapped to his back
* Nikolai, a bear of a Russian armed with a four-barrel gas-powered rotary machine gun
* Isabelle, a French woman armed with a sniper rifle
* Stans, a San Quentin prisoner with a shaved head, a scorpion tatto on his neck and armed with a prison-made knife
* Mombasa, an African member of the Sierra Leone death squad
* Hanzo, a bad ass Japanese Yakuza enforcer
* Edwin, an unassuming man who was formerly on the FBI’s most-wanted list.

Like the first film the Predators are hunting humans who are predators themselves. The script also gives reference to Black Super Predator who leads the hunt and is described as a Predator on steroids.

Latino Review also confirm that there is a cameo in the script for Arnold Schwarzenegger if he wants it.

All in all it is sounding very cool and I can’t wait to see some classic Predator action.

July 3o

Beastly

Director: Daniel Barnz
Cast: Vanessa Hudgens, Alex Pettyfer, Mary-Kate Olsen, Neil Patrick Harris, Erik Knudsen
Studio: Screen Gems

The Plot: Popular but cruel and shallow teen Kyle plays a practical joke on the wrong person when goth classmate Kendra casts a spell on him that turns him into everything he despises: a hideous beast. Enraged, he learns that the only cure is to find someone that will love him as he is -– a task that he considers impossible.

August 13

Priest

Director: Scott Stewart
Stars: Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q (Full Cast)
Studio: Screen Gems

The Plot: A priest (Bettany) disobeys church law to track down the vampires who kidnapped his niece.

THE BUZZ: Director Scott Stewart reunites with his Legion star for a second horror-thriller. Sony has invested in the duo as well, putting out both movies via their gritty and genre-y Screen Gems label, so I get the feeling modest box-office for either film will suffice. Personally, I’m eyeing Stewart’s hopeful Dark Crystal remake, which was proposed back in early 2009.

August 27

Piranha 3-D

Director: Alexandre Aja
Stars: Elisabeth Shue, Jerry O’Connell, Richard Dreyfuss (Full Cast)
Studio: Dimension Films

The Plot: A tremor under the surface of Lake Victoria unleashes scores of prehistoric piranhas, an event which rallies the local sheriff (Shue) who will risk everything to save her townsfolk.

THE BUZZ: New rule: From now on, if you’re going to remake a movie, it has to be in 3D. Oh, and the original has to be bad. And by bad, we mean terrible. Elsewhere, Richard Dreyfuss returns to scary waters in what might be the best cheapie horror flick casting since Betty White in Lake Placid (but let’s hope the supporting players and cameo appearances don’t end with Christopher Lloyd or Eli Roth). Other questions: Is Alexandre Aja embracing his camp side? Will this level of gore make it to the big screen intact?

September (no date yet)

The Ward

Director: John Carpenter
Cast: Amber Heard, Danielle Panabaker, Mika Boorem
Studio: Dimension Films

The Plot: A thriller centered on an institutionalized young woman who becomes terrorized by a ghost.

Check out this video, it was shot during re-production.

October 10

Resident Evil: Afterlife

Director: Paul W.S. Anderson
Cast: Milla Jovovich, Wentworth Miller, Ali Larter
Studio: Cinespace Film Studios

The Plot: She’s back…And she’s bringing a few of her friends.
